Winner’s Announcement

Pay It Forward Furniture Design

Western Washington University
June 7th, 2010

Four judges have reviewed and selected their favorites among 22 designs.  In addition to our panel of judges, students voted on their peer’s designs to decide a “students choice” award.

The objective is to design and construct a unique furniture solution for storage.  The storage is to be designed specifically for another person or organization for their current needs.  The furniture will be then given to that person or organization as a gift.

Mount Baker Products has generously donated all of the high quality FSC hardwood plywood for the project and has also donated $6000 for scholarships for the winners.


Here are the winners:



1st        Noah Jack, of Corvalis, OR. for Pitter Patter, an umbrella drying stand for the Whatcom Children's Museum.  $2000 scholarship from Mount Baker Products.


2nd       Ryan Hume of Bainbridge Island, WA. for Puzzle Protector, a case for the construction and safe storage of jigsaw puzzles. Designed for his 7 year old nephew.  $1500 scholarship.

3rd       Miguel Herrera of Oroville, WA. for Oruga, netbook storage and charging station for Issaquah middle school. $1000 scholarship.

Honorable Mention:
Will Wheaton of Moses Lake, WA for Dragonfly Kitchen shelf for Stepping Stones Clean and Sober Living. $500 scholarship.


Honorable Mention:
Samuel Martin of Seattle for Kindertrein, a children's playpen and room divider for a Child's Life Learning Center. $500 scholarship.

 Student Choice Award to:
Bryce Moulton for Capsa, an enclosed bookcase for the Outback Gardens at WWU. $500 scholarship. 


Judges:
Entries were judged on concept, creativity, functionality, structure, craftsmanship and form.  They were judged by Lisa Van Doren, Mechille Kiss, Jerimiah Welch, and Rachel Bjarnason.  Lisa is an owner of Ideal, a design shop on 1227 Cornwall Ave. in Bellingham.  Mechille and Rachel are industrial designers at Tabar, Inc. Jerimiah is an industrial designer and owner of Rainshine Design, LLC.

The scholarships and all of the wood were generously provided by Mount Baker Products.  Thanks to Tim Shannon for being our supporter and advocate of the industrial design program at Western.

The Mt. Baker Plywood Furniture project involved the local community through designing for various organizations and donating the furniture to them upon completion.  Design students were required to conceive, design, build, and finish a piece of storage furniture that responds to the needs of their client. 

Other example projects include:

  • A coffee and tea shelving unit for the staff of The Sean Humphrey House (assisted living for those with HIV/AIDS) by Delaney Cunningham.

  • A portable equestrian saddle and riding gear stand for the Northwest Therapeutic Riding Center by Kristen Barcheski.

  • A study desk for the Whatcom County Pregnancy Center by Martin Eizik.

  • A lockable oar rack for the Bellingham Bay Community Boating Center by Tyler Warren.

  • A costume storage rack for the Bellingham Art Academy for Youth by Justin Riehl.

  • A modular storage system for wheelchairs by Ryan Smalley.

  • A play structure and storage unit for Kid's World Cay Care by Anna Perrella.

  • A standing activity table design by Eric Forster for his brother Nathan who has cerebral palsy.

  • A first aid storage cabinet designed by Roderick Bentson for his grandfather.

As we eagerly await the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I noticed some interesting visual relationships in the vehicle designs shown in the trailer. It seems that the creative direction has been "variations on a familiar theme." The designers have taken the old vehicles from episodes 4 - 6 and done small modifications to upgrade them for 30 years later. copyright Lucasfilm Rey's Speeder Rey's speeder is essentially the same form as Luke's but turned 90 degrees. Changing from a convertible 2 seater to a single rider vehicle. The weathered, desaturated orange body color is similar. The yellow orange striping is the same.   Chair and ottoman design by Kelsey Leppek 2022 The industrial design class of Western Washington University 2022 exhibited their final chair design prototypes at HenryBuilt in Seattle, WA, USA. June 10.  A one night only exhibition. This set was made with bent steel tubing and fabric cushions. It was a packed crowd at the first graduate exhibition for WWU ID since 2019. Side chair by Brianna Brown 2022. Bent plywood connection detail. Brianna Brown. Bent plywood chair by Rafer Stromme. The two plywood forms are connected with a cast aluminum form. Transformable furniture design by Trinity Montgomery 2022. By changing the orientation and tying the braided rope this piece converts to various forms. Arm chair and side table by Dylan Willis 2022.
